Dior Spring Lips & Nails

I feel like I need a lip and nail color cleanse after a holiday season full of deep red and dark jewel tones. Anticipation of spring makes me want to wear something delicate, feminine and pretty. So, no better place to turn than Dior’s Spring 2012 Garden Party Collection. Inspired by a party in a Norman rose garden, the collection features soft pink, purples and pinks – plus a scented, mint-green nail polish I am dying to get my hands on.

Also by Dior, my new Spring lip color, Dior ‘Rouge Dior’ Lip Color in Versailles, is a hydrating, semi-opaque, coral. I like that it isn’t such a deep color that you can’t whip some on without a mirror. The golden shimmer has a gloss-like effect. And the finish has staying power but still has shine.

NARS Bilbao Lipstick

It is no secret that I love NARS Lipsticks, especially for a pop of color. But the new Spring collection offers a peachy-nude lipstick that is remarkably pretty – feminine and demure, delicate but polished. I like it because it just has that touch of plum that gives some definition to a nude pout.

Doesn’t hurt that it is named after one of my most favorite spots, a city on the Northern coast of Spain. How could you not love a massively exotic langage (Basque), Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Basque sidra, an effervescent, only slightly sweet apple adult beverage? I need a return visit, wearing my Bilbao lipstick, naturally.

Radiant Cosmetics Matte Winter Red Lipstick

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and, in my opinion, there is no better way to show your support than picking up a new lipstick. I had the pleasure of meeting Nicole, owner and founder of Radiant Cosmetics, back in December. The vision behind Radiant Cosmetics is to end human trafficking and, as of right now, Nicole and Radiant Cosmetics donate a minimum of 20% of profits from each purchase. This month they launched an initiative called “Kissing Slavery Goodbye” to create awareness.

Even better than supporting a worthy cause though makeup is when the makeup is truly fantastic to use.  I have been wearing the Matte Winter Red lipstick the past couple of weeks.  I reach for it far more than my old standbys: MAC Ruby Woo and Russian Red. It is a very cool and very deep red that manages to make my teeth look bright white. It has great staying power and a baby powder scent. The packaging is high quality and product is made in the USA. You can see the depth of pigment in the side-by-side images below.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been enamored with makeup. I grew up wanting to be a beauty editor at a fashion magazine. I pursued this goal, eventually finding myself in New York City working for a fashion house on 5th Avenue. I was living the dream, or so I thought. Inside I was miserable; something was missing.

After leaving New York City and graduating college I felt called overseas and wound up on a crazy year-long adventure, doing missions work with an organization called The World Race. 9 months into my journey I became friends with a prostitute in Thailand.

My heart broke for this woman. Walking Bangla Road, home to over 200 bars and countless women who’ve been trafficked or are trapped working in the commercial sex industry (which feeds the beast of trafficking) to provide for their families, I felt alive. Like I belonged. I was filled with an overwhelming sense that something had to be done and I was going to do it. A vision began to form.

I was given a new dream; to run a makeup company that partners with human trafficking organizations financially as well as getting people involved in their own communities physically. Especially in the United States, where trafficking happens in our own backyard.

The cosmetics industry generates $170 billion annually. Women dominate this industry and of the over 2 million human beings trafficked each year, 80% are women and girls. My dream is to awaken a generation of women to not sit back and allow this injustice to happen to our fellow sisters.

My dream is to set the captives free, one lipstick at a time.

Dior ‘Smoothing Lacquer’ Lip Polish in Radiance Expert Beige 001

My favorite holiday look is a bold eye with an easy, nude lip. The lip is not at all fussy, with just a swipe of Dior Addict Lip Polish. Not to mention, I watched Friends with Benefits this weekend and am now obsessed with Mila Kunis and her perfect hair and makeup.

Lip Polish is slightly thicker and stickier than other glosses I love, but it has great staying power and even application. Even though it is sheer, it gives my lip a uniform and polished appearance.

The formula is supposed to emulate pro makeup technique of rolling a cotton swab along models’ lips to gently exfoliate; then they applying petroleum jelly to prime the surface and multiply the shine of the gloss topcoat. I’m not sure I notice the “revolutionary and exclusive spin-on applicator” but I do see a uniform application with the perfect amount of product.

The gloss comes in three shades: Fresh Expert, Glow Expert and Radiance Expert. I prefer the Radiance Expert because of the neutral, beige undertone.

Maybelline Favorites

Today, I am thrilled to be guest blogging at the fashionable Style Me Thrifty! Madeline curates a collection of affordable fashion finds, which can always come in handy, especially this year.  I encourage you to check out her blog.  She asked me to come up with some drugstore gems, and naturally they were all Maybelline.  I am a huge fan, if you didn’t know.

Head over to Style Me Thrifty or check out the post below:

Some of the best drugstore finds these days are by Maybelline.  Not only are they a great bargain, but are serious performance powerhouses.  These four favorites have earned a permanent place on my vanity:

1.  Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealers – nothing refreshes my face like covering those dark circles and this is SO easy to use

2.  BabyLips SPF 20 Moisturizing Balm – such adorable packaging and it really heals dry winter, lips

3.  Eye Studio Master drama – creamy, high intensity liner perfect for the evening cat eye (and comes in fun colors like Sapphire)

4.  Colorsensational LipColor – incredibly rich colors that don’t dry out

Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil and Lip Balm

I finally got my little paws on some Rodin Olio Lusso goodies.  I have been lusting after this creation since this summer.  Rodin Olio Lusso was created by Linda Rodin, a former fashion editor at Harper’s Bazzar and NYC stylist.  Rodin had access to all the greatest skin care lines in the world, but ached for something simpler.  So she developed her first oil in 2007 in her own kitchen.  Other products followed, all based on the original building blocks of essential oils.  This regal beauty knows her stuff and her emphasis on simple and natural is right up my alley.

I started with her staple – the Olio Lusso Face Oil.  My skin is dry and sensitive, so I have no qualms about smearing oil all over my face.  But this might not be right for those with an acne-prone complexion.  I do get the occasional break out, but using this for a couple weeks did not result in any blemishes at all.  In fact, my skin looked clearer.   The oil is a (very) aromatic blend of eleven essential oils from flowers and other botanicals. I’d categorize the smell as a very strong floral (perhaps gardenia?).  My generally angry and sensitive skin was soothed, and in the morning, I had a glow.  It was the only moisturizer I used in the evenings, and after two weeks, my skin looks more hydrated than ever before.

But I couldn’t just stop there.  Since I consider myself somewhat of a lip balm junkie, I had to try the Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm.  It is advertised as having the same floral scent as the oil, but I can’t smell a fragrance.  What I did find is a sheer, natural lip balm that just plain worked.  The formula is not greasy at all. And I adore the chic lucite square compact. I do have a serious case of the “dropsees” and the case even survived hitting my travertine bathroom floor multiple times.  Mom is somewhat of a lip balm  junkie too – it will be a miracle if I make it back from Thanksgiving with this.  I just know she’ll snag it 🙂
