Who doesn’t want to look glam and polished with really white teeth? Well, I do. So I dove into the red lipstick world. I knew the best place to start were the bright and bold shades of MAC cosmetics. But there are so many to choose from! Selecting a color from the MAC displays can be overwhelming, so I am sharing my three favorite reds to help narrow it down.
From left to right: Lady Danger, Russian Red, Ruby Woo

Top to bottom: Lady Danger, Russian Red, Ruby Woo

Lady Danger is the most orange of the group. While it looks almost neon next to the other shades, it is a true, real red. It is more bold, so this is my favorite for a special occasion that calls for a saucy pout, like a night out in the Lower East Side. I love that Lady Danger is creamy and glossy – not near as matte as the other colors.
MAC’s top red is Russian Red, a velvety, deep red that has been around since the 1980s. This is my favorite “dress up” lipstick. You can really achieve pearly teeth with these blue undertones. I consider this more “ruby red” than crayon or tomato red. It is very opaque and matte but not as matte as Ruby Woo.
If you are looking for classic, velvet, matte, pinup red, Ruby Woo is your girl. The blue undertones are even deeper. Some say that this is so matte that it is hard to apply, but I think, with a dose of confience, it goes on quite well. You want to make sure your lips are hydrated though because it can be drying.
These lipsticks all have that subtle powdery vanilla that MAC does so well. They smell good! (odd to say that about a lipstick but it is so darn true)
I can’t wait to get my paws on the goodies from Rodin Olio Lusso, created by Linda Rodin, a former fashion editor at Harper’s Bazzar and NYC stylist. Rodin had access to all the greatest skin care lines in the world, but ached for something simpler. So she developed her first oil in 2007 in her own kitchen. Other products followed, all based on the original building blocks of essential oils. This regal beauty knows her stuff and her emphasis on simple and natural is right up my alley.

I never really embraced using a sponge for makeup applications. Mostly because I didn’t want those little wedge buggers taking up space on my vanity. Plus those sharp edges don’t give a very pretty application. But then I heard about the non-disposable. beautyblender, and was smitten with its cute little pink, ergonomic shape.
Over the past years, I have mastered all sorts of foundation application techniques (fingers, brush, kabuki, etc.) so I was prepared to be underwhelmed with the finish from the beauty blender. Cue pleasant surprise: the finish was unbelievalble smooth, natural and streak-free.
The beauty blender was invented by MUAs Rea Ann Silva and Veronica Lorenz, with the goal of achieving a perfect blend. The shape lends itself to reaching all the nooks and crannies on your face, without creases or clumps.
I feel like the blender gives the most even coverage of all avaialble application methods. I love the ease of cleaning – I am definitely more likely to clean this guy after every use than I am a brush. And for those with allergies, no fear: the beauty blender is non-latex and hypoallergenic.
Who doesn’t have dry lips in the summer? And more importantly, who doesn’t want moisturized, pouty and youthful pucker. I was recently introduced to this charmer of a skin care line based in Southern California and I am smitten. One of their best sellers has earned a spot on my nightstand, permanently.
Suggah isn’t a lip balm, but rather a treatment that can be used morning and night. In my opinion, it does everything a lip balm does and more. Plus the smell is pleasant, natural and vaguely sweet.
The consistancy is a super-rich and emollient balm that can, literally overnight, change the appearance of my lips. They become ultra-smooth and hydrated. SircuitSkin achives this by using Shea butter, rather than wax or petroleum. Suggah also contains Maxi Lip™, adding a monster dose of moisture that makes lips look fuller.
No surprise this rockstar is on their bestseller list.

The big question here is “does it crease?”. I am so happy to report: “NO!”. I have been working with this product for a couple weeks because I wanted to be absolutely sure I could report no crease. As long as you follow founder and makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift’s directions for nothing under the product, there will be zero gathering, clumping or creaseing.
There really is no need to pile anything on before, because this doubles as eye cream. The shadow moisturizes on its own and will work more effectively without interference of other products. Contact with other products can “affect its relationship with the skin.”
With all the hoopla behind mineral makeup, we know there is probably some benefit. But if you are like me, I find it drying on my dry to combo skin. This gem provides the benefit of minerals without drying with the addition of some team players: coconut oil, beeswax, jojoba seed oil, and cocoa seed butter.
Birchbox offers the Cream Shadow in the following colors:
The color I chose was Lunar, but all the Birchbox offerings are very neutral. Lunar gives a brightness with just a slight shimmer.
