A Skin Story: A Perfect Trio

A Skin Story: A Perfect Trio // Belle Belle Beauty

I’m always changing up my routine. Things move in and out of my rotation quite frequently. But occasionally, I will be simultaneously testing a wonderful trifecta of products and it is like the stars have aligned. Right now… that’s happening. Here’s how I have been perfecting my complexion these last couple of weeks.

First: Josie Maran’s new Argan Tinted Moisturizer. This formula is rich and luxurious. Coverage is very generous for a tinted moisturizer. I would say it is in the neighborhood of NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 but with a thicker texture. The SPF 30 is all natural and admirable for a makeup product. And her signature Argan oil makes it ultra-moisturizing and nourishing. She also threw in some antioxidants for good measure. This is my new pick for favorite Tinted Moisturizer/BB Cream for sensitive or dry skin. I use Light 2, but am getting closer and closer to needing Light 1.

Next up, I touch up spots needing a little more assistance with Benefit Erase Paste. This creamy, high-coverage concealer camouflages like a champ. The formula finishes with a nice radiance, especially helpful in the under eye area. It came with a spatula which I unfortunately tossed with the box, so I apply direcly with my finger. I actually like the way I can work it into my skin even if it isn’t the most sanitary method.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Pressed Finishing Powder makes for a weightless, perfecting finish. The balance between matte and radiance is ideal. The formula is oil-free and should play very nicely with oilier skin types. Like other NAKED products, optical blurring pigments perfect skin. You won’t find any chalkiness here. This step ensures hours of wear.

Find Your Favorite Concealer

Find Your Favorite Concealer // Belle Belle Beauty

A good concealer can often stand on its own. Covering redness, dark circles and a rogue blemish can give the appearance of even skin without the need for a heavy foundation. That’s why I always recommend starting your makeup with concealer – you’ll find you don’t need as much foundation or tinted moisturizer as you thought!

But how do you find the right formula? I have loads of favorites and they are each suited to particular skin types and concerns. I’m guessing one of these will tickle your fancy:

Benefit Erase Paste is a new find and I am wild about the creamy, blendable coverage. It doesn’t disappear in the middle of your day. And it works on both blemishes and under eye circles. The texture is a little thick to cover redness. Best suited for: under eye circles and blemish-prone skin.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer Custard has been in my rotation for months and is the one I reach for most often. The smooth and buildable texture does wonders on my areas of redness. And I love the luminous correction on darkness under eyes. Best suited for: drier skin and redness.

Cle de Peau Concealer has long been a makeup artist favorite. While pricey, this little tube lasts forever. I find the formula works best if you warm it up between your fingers and pat on. It covers blemishes and dark circles like a champ. Best suited for: normal to oily skin, acne-prone skin and dark circles.

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage is a long time classic but has a new long-wear upgrade. The two shade system, one to match the skin’s depth of color and one to match the skin’s undertone, ensures a perfect match. Used with a precise brush, this camouflages any spot into a flawless complexion. Best suited for: skin with age spots and blemishes.

Lancôme EFFACERNES Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer has a balanced finish, somehow being matte but still with some radiance. But the real beauty to this concealer is its waterproof properties, making it well-suited for tearjerker events, long days or hot weather. Best suited for: oilier skin, brides and those who need all day coverage.

A Stop At The NARS Counter

A Stop At The NARS Counter // Belle Belle Beauty

Doesn’t need to be explained that I am a NARS aficionado. They consistently put out wearable, innovated products that I can resist snapping up. I’ve been on a bender lately, and there are three NARS products rocking my world. Here are the details:

NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder: I’ll be the first to admit, when I got my paws on this I wasn’t sure exactly what it would do for me. The silky, white powder look innoculous at best. Think again, sister. This stuff is a true MVP. Powered with a photochromic technology, the formula difuses light and adjusts on cue, enhancing foundation and giving your makeup a long-lasting effect. The mineral powder is packed with glycerin and vitamin E to nourish skin. Those with oilier skin will love how it controls shine.

Concealer (Correcting Shade) in Pear is a godsend to those with redness (raises hand). I love how it counteracts the red around my nose or if I have any sort of blemish. The rich concealer blends seamlessly and doesn’t crease or look powdery. It also is loaded with vitamin E to nourish skin.

Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Paris Follies is the newest addition to the color lineup. The flamingo pink shade is perfect to accent my sunkissed skin this summer. If you haven’t tried Larger Than Life, get ready for some shine and staying power. I also love the way it keeps my lips hydrated. And the tiny applicator allows for precise application of the high pigment formula.

Mineral Fusion Concealer

Mineral Fusion Concealer // Belle Belle Beauty

While I have many treasured concealers, I generally prefer formulas with a silky consistency packaged in a tube like these. But in certain situations, I prefer a compact. I love throwing a compact in my purse. And non-liquid formulas are much better for travel.

Enter Mineral Fusion’s concealer duo. Also must be noted, this works beautifully in matching as you can blend shades to find your perfect match. The duo also is great for transitioning between seasons as the natural coloring of your face changes.

I’ve been using the Neutral shade and leaning towards using the darker color under my eyes. I blend both shades to cover blemishes and conceal around my nose. And the lighter shade makes a great eye shadow base on my eyelids. What I most appreciate about the formula is the compact actually transforms into a smooth cream for the most seamless coverage. I never get creases or cakeyness.

And lastly, I cannot tell you how many questions I get about natural and vegan products. So, I am happy to report that this concealer is:

  • 100% Vegan
  • All-natural
  • Hypo-allergenic
  • Never tested on animals
  • Paraben, Phthalate, SLS, & fragrance-free
  • Whole Foods Premium compliant

Available at Whole Foods Markets, drugstore.com and MineralFusion.com

Hourglass Foundations and Concealer

Hourglass Foundations and Concealer // Belle Belle Beauty

I’ve had the pleasure of covering quite a bit of Hourglass makeup on Belle Belle. Some favorites include Ambient Lighting Powder and Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick, among many many others. The luxury brand has a true pulse on classic beauty with serious formulas that flatter so many skin types. But I was remiss in covering one (favorite) product area – foundation and concealer. When I dove in, I was thrilled to find two different foundation formulas. I fell hard for them both – but they are quite different. So, hopefully this will help you decide which is perfect for your skin.

First up, Veil Fluid Makeup. If you have aging or drier skin, this is the formula for you. The formula is packed with anti-aging ingredients like wrinkle-filling peptide Matrixyl Synthe’6, wheat and marine-based Skin Tightener ST PH and Vitamin E. The texture has a moderate weight, but the silicon-based formula is buildable in coverage. The finish is that dewy and glow-y look that I am always drawn to. I like applying with my fingers very sparingly for a sheer, radiant look. Vegan-friendly. Eleven available shades across a wide spectrum.

Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation could be a true godsend for those with oily and acne-prone skin. The formula is liquid powder with a matte finish, allowing a full day wear without powder or touch-ups. The oil-free formula is also water-resistant – can we say perfect beach vacation foundation!? But the exciting part is, after many customer testimonials, Hourglass realized that Immaculate was helping with acne and scarring! They are now conducting clinical testing and the preliminary results are pretty dramatic. This stuff controls oil, improves scars, lessens severity and frequency of breakouts and improves texture and clarity. This development makes me extremely enthusiastic for this foundation for readers who suffer from acne. Also, this foundation is also gluten-free. There are eight new shades for a total of sixteen options.

I’d be remiss not to mention Hidden Corrective Concealer. I’m not terribly surprised Hourglass developed such a luxe, balanced concealer. The stick is creamy but with robust coverage. This allows for both under eye and blemish concealing. I’d liken it to a slightly more creamy version of this. The finish, as it dries down, is slightly matte, but the Vitamin E charged formula keeps it from caking. And there are six shade options.

Available at Sephora and Barneys.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer - group shot

Where have you been all my life, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer??? Whoa, talk about a concealer that can do it all. While it has been mostly touted as great covering under eye darkness, I have found it is a fantastic spot/blemish concealer as well. The balanced, buildable formula is a true go-to for me these days.

The formula is creamy and hydrating, hence the radiant properties. While it has a thin texture, I’d say the coverage is moderate to full. A little bit goes a long way. Plus, it is buildable, so you can always add more if you feel you need a bit more coverage.

The formula also contains hydrating skin care. Light diffusing technology helps blur imperfections. And the pigment blends seamlessly into my natural coloring.

I can get a full day of wear out of this. While it is crease-less, I’ve found it does best on freshly moisturized skin – any dryness can interfere with its blendability.

SHADES INCLUDE (from lightest to darkest):
  • CHANTILLY: true ivory shade for fairest complexions
  • VANILLA:  tiny cast of pink for the fair complexion
  • HONEY: warm peach tone for light to medium complexion
  • CUSTARD: yellow tone for light to medium complexion
  • GINGER: golden undertone for medium complexion
  • BISCUIT: medium dark natural balance of pink and yellow undertones
  • CARAMEL: medium dark yellow and golden undertones
  • AMDANDE: medium dark with golden olive undertones
  • CAFÉ: dark shade with warm red undertones
  • CACAO: dark shade with deep gold to brown undertones

note: Ginger is my preferred shade. I wear Santa Fe in the Sheer Glow Foundation and St. Morti in Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (although this winter I should lighten up with the new Terre Neuve). I was surprised I was this dark on the spectrum, but I prefer a concealer that matches my skin tone instead of one shade lighter.
