Willa Natural Skincare

Willa Natural Skincare is designed specifically for pre-teen and teenaged skin, but don’t think about stop reading if you don’t fall into those categories.  Because, Willa makes some products that I find compelling and fabulous for my more mature and drier skin. And I am not alone – beauty editors from Lucky, Refinery 29 and Daily Candy agree.

Willa, a pre-teen herself, and her mother have been working for over three years to develop the line. Willa perceptively asked why she has to use her little sister’s “babyish” soap one evening. After an unsuccessful search for an age-appropriate alternative, Willa Natural Skincare was born. Willa’s mother, Christy Prunier, knew developing an early routine to prevent acne and sun damage was crucial.

The packaging is adorable – feminine and fun without being juvenile. I applaud the various SPF products. The color collection is so age appropriate but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to wear it all myself! Perfect subtle color for hot summer days. Some of my personal favorites from the line (all under $11):

  • be brillant natural body lotion contains aloe and chamomile, healing my skin without being tacky or sticky. It absorbs super fast and has a clean, refreshing scent.
  • start fresh foaming face wash has that voluminous, airy foam that makes my skin feel so very clean. But it is gentle, preventing the tight and dry feel. It contains anti-oxidant green tea leaf extract and hydrating Glycerin.
  • smile shine lip gloss is super moisturizing, packed with vitamins C & E, giving lips a sheer ultra-shine. I love the clever clip… no more searching a huge handbag when in desperate need of lip hydration.

The whole line has a conscious formula: Paraben and sulfate free, DEA and phthalate free and Not tested on animals. Made in the USA.  Willa Natural Skincare is available at Target.

VI Medical Peel

On my latest visit to Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but notice my friend, Amber, raving about a chemical peel she had experienced. Her skin always looks youthful and glow-y so I was captivated. At the same time, I was a little bit deflated, surely this peel it was only available in larger cities. I contacted the company that developed the peel – Vitality Institute Medical Products. After some research from the folks at VI Medical, we were able to track down a provider in my hometown (check here for providers in your area).

Needless to say I was thrilled. The peel has the total package of benefits: it helps reverse sun damage, minimizes fine lines, evens out skin tone, reduces acne scarring, and more. In just seven days, I was going to achieve what takes months of persistent and consistent skin care (if you are lucky).

On a Tuesday I checked into a “medical spa” like location for what was a very quick appointment. I was pretty nervous since I had never had lasers, peels, injections performed on my face. I’m an old pro at laser hair removal, but we are talking about the face here. Turns out that I had nothing to be worried about.

The medical-grade, chemical peel had zero pain. It was slightly stingy, but that was it. A little fan helped clear the air of a chemical scent. I was out of there in less than 30 minutes. Most surprisingly, I looked totally normal. I was out and about the rest of the day with what kind of looked like an embarrassed flush (if that).

You are sent home with an arsenal of follow up products. For two nights, you apply an additional peel. I’ll be honest this did sting. But it was worth it. After a couple ibuprofen and turning on the fan, I was asleep in no time. The second night of the peel is a little more intense, but same deal. So far, I was just red – presentable, but red.

On the third day, the peeling began. A very thin layer of my skin was shed from my entire face. It didn’t hurt, but I am sure I wasn’t very pretty to look at. After about 36 hours of what looked like the results of terrible sunburn, I was in for a treat.

After all that information, you probably would like to ask me “Was it worth it?” – A resounding, loud and emphatic yes. Even my dad continues to compliment me on my even skin tone. My main issues were sun damage and hyperpigmentation and I saw dramatic results. I have dry and somewhat sensitive skin and my experience was normal and manageable. You can continue to do these peels 3 to 4 times a year. I can see myself making this part of my routine. This is also a fabulous way to treat acne.

Jo Dee at Tulsa Surgical Arts performed my peel. She was knowledgeable, sweet and put up with my plethora of questions. She was even available for calls and text messages the whole week with any other questions or concerns. I highly recommend them if you are in the area.

Happy Birthday, Shiseido! And a giveaway to celebrate!

I’m always fascinated by the evolution of skin care and makeup over the years. Especially interesting are products that consistently remain part of women’s routines. And today is a good day for a little nostalgia. It is a Monday after all and I’m t-minus four days till my birthday. Speaking of birthdays, one of my favorite companies is celebrating a whopper. Shiseido is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year! And they are throwing quite a party.

First, on facebook, Shiseido has launched a virtual Wishing Tree. You can make a “wish for the world” and for every 140 wishes made, Shiseido will plant a Cherry Blossom tree in collaboration with the New York Restoration Project (NYRP). Click here to participate. Secondly, Shiseido is honoring its first-ever cosmetic product – Eudermine – with a re-launch in its original packaging from over 100 years ago.

Having a bottle of Eudermine in its original 1897 packaging on your vanity is like having a historical piece of artwork in your home. Not to mention, I love using it every evening. It is termed an essence or softening lotion, designed to be used kind of like a toner. It is nimble, adjusting your skin for changes in temperature and humidity, keeping skin balanced. It very gently smooths and primes skin for hydration. It is great first step after cleansing to prep the skin for treatment and remove the last bit of grime. As per instructions, I swipe it on with a cotton pad.

And the party doesn’t stop there. If you purchase Eudermine on shiseido.com, you’ll receive special Limited Edition Blotting Papers. The outer carton of this exclusive Shiseido.com gift showcases an illustration by Ayao Yamana, a legendary Shiseido designer from the 60s and 70s. Or, if you are feeling lucky, enter to win a bottle of Eudermine using the widget below. (US only, please)

Bliss That’s Incredi-Peel!

I’m a huge fan of at-home “peels” using Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Check out some of my previous favorites here. They instantly add glow and smoothness, clearing and evening skin tone. Honestly, they are one of my most rewarding skin care steps. I jumped on it when one of my all-time favorite brands recently launched their own glycolic resurfacing pads, That’s Incredi-‘peel’!.

The biggest difference here is the strength: these pads are worker bees with serious active ingredients. They call it “spa strength”. This hit the spot for me because I am not a glycolic novice. I wouldn’t recommend them for someone just starting out with this ingredient. But for those who are looking for an extra punch after using other formulas, get on it.

No need for timers or rinsing. That’s Incredi-‘peel’! is powered by an innovative technology that gradually releases powerful levels of exfoliating glycolic acid throughout the night. For all this talk of strength, they did not irritate my skin at all! The witch hazel and licorice extract soothe the skin. These might just be my glycolic of choice.

Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate Results

The stars aligned a couple weeks ago and my new skin care addiction was born. I had just left a dermotologists appointment armed with new information that I should be using a Vitamin C product every day. That afternoon, I was introduced to Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate (containing 10.5% Pure Vitamin C). Shame on me – I was just now finding out about Kiehl’s best-selling product!

Vitamin C, one of our key tools in the fight against aging, has been shown to have many positive effects on the skin. Kiehl’s found a way to stabilize Pure Vitamin C at high levels for maximum impact. The formula was literally put to the test in a dermatologist-controlled study. They found that, over time, the formula had a “significant and progressive effect on “marionette lines” around the mouth, “crow’s feet” and sub-orbital wrinkles in the eye area as well as other facial lines and wrinkles. In addition, skin shows an improvement in texture, tone, and sallowness.”

You don’t have to tell me twice. I’m sold. With a couple weeks of use, I have experienced zero sensitivity. Along with other skin care efforts, my skin does appear more even and plumper. Plus, I love the feel of this formula. It is silky and soothing and performs great under SPF and makeup.

Favorite Foaming Cleansers

Sometimes, I just crave a good foam to get my face clean. There is something gratifying about lathering a foaming wash. And these days, there are tons of options that can be foamy without drying. Here are my five favorites:

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser was just awarded the Most Revolutionary Beauty Product of the last 20 years by the CEW UK (Cosmetic Executive Women). I can’t believe that I was just learning about this cult beauty classic. One is bought every 19 seconds around the world. So, naturally I had to try it myself. And now I know why it is so popular. This is a classic gentle cleanser that can remove makeup like a champ. Any skin type can use the two-phase cleanser. Phase one cleanses the skin with a plant-based rich foam, tackling the toughest of makeup. Then you polish your skin with the included pure muslin cloth to dislodge dead skin cells and help reveal clean, soft and radiant skin.

Freeze 24-7 Skin Glacé has the ability to get skin super duper clean but still leave it smooth and supple. The formula contains a proprietary complex of Bio-transformed Rice Bran and Hydrolyzed Soy Protein that purifies and detoxifies but also hydrates. There is no tight or dry feeling but a balance of moisture. And it is calming. Apply this to dry skin and leave on for two minutes as a mask. The formula magically transforms to a foam on your face (so very cool). Love the mask use for a deep cleaning twice a week. Also great for getting off a full face of makeup after a big night. This works great on sensitive skin as well.

Kate Somerville® Gentle Daily Wash has long been a favorite cleanser but it hadn’t been in my rotation for a while. When I visited her Clinic out in Los Angeles (epic experience FYI), my esthetician, Kimberly, directed me to use it. For the past month, my skin has felt more balanced and less irritated. I also love her Cleansing Milk for a gentle, yet hydrating cleanse. But this gel formula has a little bit more power in removing SPF, makeup and urban grit from my face.

Arcona ‘Berry Fruit Bar’ Cleanser is for those of you who just love a bar soap. This also comes in handy when you are travelling. Since it isn’t liquid, you can easily toss it into a carry-on. This cleanser is packed with raspberry and cranberry extracts rich in vitamin C (antioxidants) that cleanse without irritations. It also calms and hydrates skin, without clogging sensitive pores, with white tea and vitamin E. Not to mention is smells amazingly yummy.

Clé de Peau Beauté Gentle Cleansing Foam is an all-time favorite that I have been obsessed with for years. This cleanser is an ultra-rich foam that polishes skin into smooth radiance. The emollient texture and rich moisturizers are incredibly hydrating. It contains Cle de Peau’s Illuminating Complex, a powerful moisture-stabilizing ingredient that creates a radiant complexion. Skin is left supple with no tightness.
