Gwenyth Paltrow wears NARS at the 84th annual Academy Awards

My vote for best dressed tonight was hands-down Gwenyth Paltrow. That included her fresh, classic face. Celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez used NARS cosmetics get the presenter red carpet ready.

“It’s elegantly bronzed,” said celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez for NARS Cosmetics about the red carpet look she created for Gwyneth Paltrow. “The dress makes such a statement, but it also has no color, so we needed to create a makeup look that complemented the dress and was still sophisticated enough for the red carpet. I really loved the Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer because it gives a sun-kissed look to her skin, and perfect against a white dress!”

Retro Style

Retro revival has been inspiring me all year and I decided to collect some of my favorite products to recreate the look. Yesterday, I picked up Red Revival lip color from Maybelline.  It is so incredibly hydrating and long-wearing.  (side note: I also recommend Fifth Avenue Fuchsia)  The application is creamy, but highly pigmented.  What a great color range!  And the price, great excuse to pick up two or three!

For the eyes, my first step was a rediscovered favorite: Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eye Liner Black Ebony.  I spray some Shu Uemura Depsea Water Facial Mist in Bergamot on the Laura Mercier Flat Eyeliner Brush, a couple swipes on the cake, and tuck the brush along my lash line.  Don’t drag the brush , just press and repeat until you have covered the entire lash.  The look is definining and demure – but utterly sexy.

A bold brow is the cornerstone of the retro look, and requires a brow pencil.  My favorite these days is Le Metier de Beaute Brow Bound Eyebrow Pencil.  It has a gel consistency and I work it onto the hairs rather than the skin.  I blend and tame flyaways with the brush include on the other end of the pencil.

Dramatic mascara extends the pigment from the lash line through the lashes.  Lancome Hypnose Custom Volume Mascara adds just the right amount of volume.  A little highlighter like the gorgeous Lumière Sculptèe de Chanel Highlighting Powder on the inner corner of your eyes and cheekbones and you are set!

Fall Drugstore Beauty

I had the opportunity to try a luxury brand of skincare, but unfortunately my skin reacted poorly.  So, I decided this was an excuse to give drugstore skincare a whirl.  In the past, I have relied on drugstore brands for all or part of my ritual with average results.  But now, there are formulas available that have beauty editors and dermatologists raving, namely Olay Regenerist.  So I picked up the Regenerating Serum and Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum.  They aren’t cheap – each will run you $21.49 at Target.  But they are a far cry from luxury skin care lines at department stores where night cream can be over $500.

But that’s not all… I also picked up some long-time staples including Cetaphil, Lubriderm, and Orly polish.  Going to give the Bonder a try – Eva Chen swares by it. Fifth Ave Fuschia and Revival Red Maybelline lipcolors were irresistible.  Snuck some candy corn in there – it is October after all…

What are your drugstore staples?

Barefaced Look

Since the busy week in New York, I have been embracing a very basic, clean face.  It is amazing how many compliments I have received.  I literally pared down my routine to these five products, striving for a flawless looking fave.  It works great when you are being adventurous in your outfit and want the focus there!

L’Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Smooth Souffle Makeup

I am so lazy when matching colors.  So I shy away from drugstore brands.  I still haven’t figured out the right shade for the hot, new Maybelline FIT.  But I did happen to find the right shade in this Souffle and I was smitten with the texture.  I thought it would be perfect to use with the L’Oreal Magic Perfecting Base, previously and positively reviewed.  While the color worked well with my Fair-Medium skin, there was a greyish cast to my face.  There wasn’t the luminosity I have enjoyed with so many other products.  For a matte look, this could work, but cheek color would have to be employed.

d.j.v. beautenizer Fiberwig LX

Leave it to the Japanese to come up with a mascara unlike any other.  d.j.v. beautenizer Fiberwig LX boasts an ability to replicate false eyelashes and I purchased this product for that effect.  I have come to love this stuff but not because it makes me look like I am wearing falsies.  I am not sure it “replicates the illusion of false eyelashes” – which might be is a good thing.  My lashes come out lightweight, natural and clean.  There is absolutely no budging of this stuff all day long.  You can layer coat after coat (not sure if you are supposed to do this, but I do anyway) and lashes never get clumpy.  I know there is lots of buzz about Dior and Maybelline, but for now, this is my go-to mascara.
