DERMAdoctor KP Duty

Dr. Kunin developed DERMAdoctor to target common (but often overlooked) skin conditions and concerns. While she has tons of products, it was the KP Duty line that really jumped out at me. My Keratosis Pilaris has continuously worsened with age and no doctor or dermatologist recommended anything that would help. Thankfully that all changed after I bought the KP Duty Body Scrub and Dermatologist Moisturizing Therapy. Half of all people have this condition. So most of you are probably familiar with Keratosis Pilaris. But if you aren’t:

KP is a common skin disorder typified by ‘chicken skin’—bumps commonly found on upper arms, thighs and torso. Excess skin forms around individual hair follicles, creating the characteristic minute, rough, grater-like bumps. This disorder is particularly likely to affect anyone prone to eczema, asthma or hay fever.

KP Duty Body Scrub is a heavy duty exfoliation. Don’t even think about using this on your face. The scrub has large granules but doesn’t burn. I had to ease into using it as the first two uses caused some redness and peeling. This medical-quality treatment combines a mini-chemical peel and microdermabrasions.

After exfoliating, I used the Dermatologist Moisturizing Therapy. This rich lotion with hyaluronic acid and texturizing dimethicone kept my dry skin hydrated and plump. But there was still active ingredients at work exfoliating: glycolic acid and urea soften and smooth dry and rough skin. Green tea works as an antioxidant.

After a couple of weeks, my skin was smoother with diminished red spots. Each passing week of use shows an improvement. This definitely will be in my long-term routine.

Gucci Flora Gracious Tuberose and Gorgeous Gardenia

Fragrance is so personal. But I love these new Gucci fragrances for summer so much I urge you to check them out. Flora was inspired by an iconic print originally designed for Princess Grace of Monaco. The pattern was revived a couple years ago and now has been translated into a scent. I am usually drawn to clean, herbal and musky scents. My signature fragrance through high school and in my 20s was Donna Karan Cashmere Mist. But I now find myself loving fruity, floral fragrances, especially for the warm summer months. They are so light, clean, fresh and pretty.

Gracious Tuberose:

  • Top notes – peach, orange flower (orange blossoms come through in a big way for me)
  • Heart notes – rose, tuberose
  • Base notes – white cedar wood, citrus

Gorgeous Gardenia:

  • Top notes – red berries, juicy pear
  • Heart notes – white gardenia, frangipani flower
  • Base notes – patchouli, brown sugar accord (after some time of wear, this patchouli is front and center on me)

St. Ives Scrub-free Exfoliating Pads and Naturally Smooth Hand Cream

What do you get when you mix the buzz-worthy beauty ingredient with affordable, drugstore cult-favorite brand?  St. Ives Scrub-free Exfoliating Pads and Naturally Smooth Hand Cream! Love it the latest and greatest appears on drugstore shelves. And what’s hot right now are AHA’s.

So what are AHAs and how do they work? The most common forms of AHAs are: glycolic acid (from sugar cane), lactic acid , malic acid (from apples), citric acid (from citrus fruits) and tartaric acid (from grape wine). Human skin has two principal components, the avascular epidermis and the underlying vascular dermis. Aging generally occurs in the underlying dermis. So that’s where AHAs come in. Due to small molecular size, these guys can penetrate the top layer of skin (glycolic is the smallest). The generate more collagen at deeper levels and generate new cells at the surface.

I’ve been incorporating these into my routine in the form of products found in the post here. But if your looking to find them at the drugstore price point, look no further!

St. Ives Scrub-Free Exfoliating Pads are gentle enough to use everyday. They are perfect to throw in a gym bag or pack for a summer trip.

Drugstore Hits and Misses

1. Almay Eyeshadow Trio Smoky Smoky Hazel – Sorry to start out on a negative note, but skip this guy. The powder has very little pigment and is quite dry. I like the idea of a kit that caters to eye color, but they missed on this one.

2. L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow – Instead, pick up these pots. They look like pressed powder but have a creamy formula. They apply like a dream. I wish they had more colors and some less metallic options but only because I love them so much. I have Endless Pearl, which is relatively matte and a great base color. Bronze Taupe is a beautiful, warm and multifaceted neutral. These appear much more expensive than they are. Also, they mean it when they say don’t discard the little interior plastic to press down the product. If it isn’t on there the powder loosens. Whoopsie.

3. Ardell Fashion Lashes Black (110) – I am relatively new to false lashes and was incredibly intimidated to try them. But I gave it a whirl with these, using Duo adhesive. It was a breeze! They look very natural and I got loads of compliments. They were comfortable to wear didn’t damage my own lashes. Use tweezers to hold the lash strip. Put a dot of glue on the back of your hand. Slowly and carefully dip the lash strip into the glue several times along base of the lashes. Lay onto your lashes, add mascara and liner to blend with your own!

4. Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in Blackest Black – This guy is an award winner and no surprise why. The formula has massive staying power. The color is a perfect, deep black. The brush is easy to handle. Need I say more?

5. Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Coffee Cake – I’ve been ooing and ahing about this innovative product all over the social media waves. The texture is what makes this blush different. It almost feels like a makeup applicator sponge at first. It is malleable but springs back. It applies like a cream, but dries to a long staying powder appearance. The effect is not matte but there is no shimmer (which I love). I picked up Coffee Cake, a nude peach that works great for a tonal, natural face.

6. eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm – I reviewed these here, but I just had to mention them again. They are fabulous balms and are so easy to find in a big purse. They have loads of flavors with medicated and SPF options.

7. Maybelline Color Tatoo 24HR Eyeshadow in Bad to the Bronze – Another standout drugstore eyeshadow. This is creamier than the L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow, with slighly less pigment but a little more staying power. Bad to the Bronze is a lighter version of Bronze Taupe. I also wish this came in more colors because I love it so. Many of the shades are dramatic and on the cooler side.

8. eos Shave Cream, Ultra Moisturizing, Lavender Jasmine – If you like a foaming shave cream, this isn’t for you. But the smell is what sold me. It also comes in pomegranate raspberry, island blue, cucumber melon, vanilla bliss and sensitive – fragrance free. It is massively hydrating and almost feels like conditioner.

9. eos Refresh Active Care Hand and Body Lotion – Again, they got me on the fabulous scent. The fresh cucumber lingers just enough. It isn’t greasy in the least bit. These products aren’t tested on animals and paraban-free. I’m becoming quite the eos fan.

Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum

I don’t review parfumes very often, so when I do mention them, I think it is something exceptional. And how could you resist something inspired Italian It Girls? I’d like to envision myself as a cool, careless and rebellious Italian heiress. Not even close, I know… but I can dream, can’t I?

This gorgeous bottle is a true peice of art for your vanity. The metal flowers make this bottle indulgent and elegant. And I love the old school spray cap.

While I like to describe Valentina as classic, clean, springy and fresh, I understand the are more nuanced “notes”. These include:

  • Italian – Exuberant Freshness – Calabrian bergamot and white alba truffle.
  • Floral – Floral Irreverence – White flowers and wild strawberry.
  • Oriental – Captivating Ambery Woods – Cedar and amber.

Valentina is already my Spring 2012 fragrance. Check it out for yourself at Neiman Marcus – after all, it is Beauty Event time!

Cle de Peau Beaute UV Protection Cream SPF50

If you aren’t a SPF fanatic, I highly recommend you become one. It is the absolute only way to prevent aging and preserve even skin tone. I don’t care if you are in your early 20s or late 80s – wear it…. everyday.

There are plenty of options out there but my favorites are Aveeno Active Naturals Continous Protection Sunblock Face Lotion, SPF 100 from the drugstore and SkinCeuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30. But for now, I am completely hooked on the luxurious Cle de Peau Beaute UV Protection Cream SPF50. It is a pretty penny, but goes far beyond just sun block.

I love finding a luxury product that can live up to its price point. Beyond superpowered sun protection, the workhorse ingredients improve the look of my skin even before I put on makeup.

  • Hybiscus Extract from Africa that can repair damaged cells
  • Powerful Triple Antioxidant including Thiotaurin, Chestnut Rose, and Ginko Leaf Extract
  • Thyme and Turmeric Extracts prevent cell damage and wrinkles
  • Vitamin C to brighten
  • Natural Rose and Rare Orchid with grapefruit, mandarin and peach for a yummy scent

This formula is super absorbant and silky. I love the way my makeup glides over the cream. I can actually say I look forward to the SPF step in my morning skincare routine.

Need an excuse? Tomorrow is the first day of Neiman Marcus Beauty Event! With a cosmetics or fragrance purchase of $100 or more, you receive a free tote loaded with beauty samples. I’ve got my eye on the pink version.
